National Park Authority seeks appeal on High Court judgment

18 April 2008

The Peak District National Park Authority is to challenge a High Court ruling over its enforcement action to control the extent of limestone quarrying at Backdale on Longstone Edge.

At a special meeting on April 18, the Authority decided to appeal against the recent High Court ruling of Mr Justice Sullivan, who overturned a Planning Inspector’s decision to uphold the Authority’s action following a public inquiry last year.

At the same time, the Authority is to continue discussions with government ministers, seeking help to achieve a permanent solution, which could include revocation of the planning permission granted in 1952.

And it will also pursue talks with landowners, mineral rights owners and operators working on the extensive area of Longstone Edge covered by the 1952 permission.
