The Country is Angry, Save Longstone Edge Group tells Hilary Benn

18 September 2008

The Save Longstone Edge Group has told Government Minister Hilary Benn that visitors, residents and members of their national organisations are angry that nothing is being done to stop accelerating quarrying on Longstone Edge, in the heart of the Peak District National Park.

While applauding the Court of Appeal’s decision to hear yet another round of legal arguments about the quarrying, the group tells Benn that the area affected by active quarrying at Backdale has grown by one-third since the previous court decision which gave the quarrying company the go-ahead to carry on with its destruction of our national heritage.

The group has demanded a meeting with the Minister, to tell him to put his money where his mouth is and buy out the ancient permission that is allowing the company to continue to plunder limestone from a National Park.
